The Kitchen
No volleying in the kitchen
It is a fault to volley while touching the kitchen or the kitchen line. To hit a ball that has bounced, you may go into the kitchen.
You must not volley inside the kitchen (the non-volley zone) (11.A, 11.A.1). It is also a fault when you are standing on the kitchen line, because the line is part of the kitchen (3.A.4.c).
Not just your feet
While you are volleying, it is also a fault if any of these touch the kitchen (11.A.1):
- Any part of your body (hands, knees, and so on)
- Your paddle, hat, or anything else you are holding or wearing
- Your partner, if you are touching them (for example, you grab your partner while they are in the kitchen)
"Above" the kitchen is OK
The kitchen means the area on the ground. It does not include the space above it (3.A.4.c). If your feet are outside the kitchen, you may reach your paddle out over the kitchen to volley (11.A, 3.A.4.c).
When you may go into the kitchen
The kitchen is not a "keep out" area. You may go in at any time, except to volley (11.A). For example, you may go in to hit a ball that has bounced.
But after that, before you volley, you must put both feet on the ground outside the kitchen (11.A.3, After leaving the kitchen, get both feet down before you volley).
