The Kitchen

After leaving the kitchen, get both feet down before you volley

After you enter the kitchen, you cannot volley until both feet are on the ground outside the kitchen. Jumping from inside the kitchen and volleying in the air is also a fault.

After you enter the non-volley zone (kitchen), you cannot volley until both feet are on the ground outside the kitchen (11.A.3).

1. Put both feet outside the kitchen -> 2. Then you may volley

Examples

  • You step into the kitchen to hit a dink, bring both feet back out, and then volley → OK (11.A, 11.A.3)
  • You step one foot out of the kitchen and volley while the other foot is still in the air → fault (11.A.3)
  • You jump up from inside the kitchen and volley in the air → fault (even if you land outside) (11.A.3)
  • You jump up from outside the kitchen, volley, and land outside the kitchen → OK (11.A)
  • You jump from outside the kitchen, volley, and land inside the kitchen → fault (11.A.1, 11.A.2, Entering the kitchen from your volley's momentum is a fault)

Common mistakes

  • Stepping back onto the non-volley zone line (kitchen line) does not count. You are still in the kitchen, because the line is part of the kitchen (3.A.4.c, 11.A.3)
  • You may enter the kitchen at any time, as long as you are not volleying (11.A, No volleying in the kitchen)
