Dead Ball
A ball that is no longer in play because the rally has stopped, for example after a fault.
A ball that is no longer in play (Section 2, Definitions). When a rally is stopped by a fault, a hinder, a line call, and so on, the ball becomes dead (8.F.2, 9.A, 9.B, 9.C).
A fault can only happen while the ball is in play (9.B.1). So once the ball is dead, touching the net is not a fault (9.B.1, 13.G). However, stepping into the non-volley zone (kitchen) because of the momentum from a volley is still a fault, even after the ball is dead (9.B.1, 11.A.2, Entering the kitchen from your volley's momentum is a fault).
